School Attendance, Elementary
School Attendance, Elementary
What does this measure?
The average number of elementary students attending school each day, divided by the total number of students. Elementary students are defined as those in kindergarten through sixth grades.
Why is this important?
Children who do not regularly attend elementary school will miss out on developing key skills, such as reading and arithmetic, critical to future success in school and life. They are also likely to continue a pattern of irregular and insufficient attendance later in their schooling.
How are Cayuga and Seneca counties performing?
In 2010, an average of 95% of Cayuga and 96% of Seneca elementary school students attended school each day. This is on par with the state (excluding NYC) rate of 95% and the rates of comparison counties, which ranged from 94%–96%. Rates have remained stable for all counties and the state (excluding NYC) during the past decade.
